ONP Mountain Goats on the Move

Olympic National Park’s mountain goats have begun a historic journey back to their native habitat in the North Cascades.

Operations to move as many of the estimated 700 mountain goats as possible began this week — an effort that includes helicopters, tranquilizer darts, nets and refrigerated trucks.

ONP wildlife branch chief Patty Happe tells the PD they were catching as many as 10 goats a day.  But some days things move faster than others.

Veternarians including Dr Alison Case of northwest trek wildlife park are checking every animal – and will continue to monitor them after release.

Monday marked the beginning of a five-year operation.
